As we approach Thanksgiving we often think about what we are grateful for. Instead of only being grateful during this one holiday, we should be grateful always.
Thank God for the day he blessed you with, the car you drive, the home you live in, your family, your friends, your job, and the list goes on. There is always something to be grateful for.
Being grateful improves your mood and your health. People who aren't grateful are more stressed than those who are.

Here are some benefits to being grateful:
1. It improves your marriage. Being grateful for your spouse and the things they do will greatly improve your marriage. Telling them daily at least one thing you are grateful for will make the both of you happier.
2. It improves your friendships. Be grateful for the friendships you have. No two friendships are alike. Let your friends know you appreciate them and that you are thankful for their friendship.

3. Reduces jealousy and envy. When we are grateful for the things we have and are blessed with, we have less time to focus on the things that other people have and don't have the desire to want what others have.
4. Helps you sleep better. When we are grateful we don't go to sleep wondering why we don't have what we want, we're not stressing about the things we're not grateful for.
5. Improves your health. Being grateful helps us to be happier and when we are happier we tend to be healthier. When we are stressed and worried it causes many complications. We end up having more headaches, muscle tension, and chest pain just to name a few.

6. We're not as selfish or self-centered. Being grateful helps us to focus on other people. When we're grateful we tend to help others.
7. Helps our career. Our performance at work increases when we are grateful. Being grateful for the job you have, the co workers, your boss, and your income help you to be happier with your career and shifts your focus away from the small insignificant things that may make you want to quit your job.
8. Become more optimistic. The more grateful we are the more optimistic we become.

Count your blessings, name them one by one, count your blessings, see what God has done. I remember singing this in church when I was younger and it still resonates through me today.
Some of the good things in life people take for granted. Sometimes God is shutting a door that we are trying to fight to stay open. Be grateful that God is closing that door. God could be protecting you from something bad that could happen or perhaps God has something bigger and better in store for you. Try to be grateful for the things God has done for you and the things he has blessed you with.

Start children off on the way they should go,

and even when they are old they will not turn from it.

-Proverbs 22:6 (NIV)

There are three different main terms people use when teaching their kids from home instead of sending them off to public school. You may find yourself a little confused about what the difference is between Lifeschooling, Homeschooling and Unschooling. What exactly is Lifeschooling and Unschooling? Aren't they the same thing as homeschooling?

First, I'm going to start with Lifeschooling.

In the Faithwire article "Why Kirk Cameron Isn't Sending His Kids to Public School", Kirk Cameron prefers the term Lifeschooling. You can read the article here: http://www.faithwire.com/2016/10/27/why-kirk-cameron-isnt-sending-his-kids-to-public-school/

Lifeschooling is homeschooling but, Lifeschooling works with your family life. You discover your child's God given gifts and talents. We teach our children through real-life experiences. We can teach our kids about the 4 seasons while on a nature walk. We can teach them how to change the oil in a car, change the tires, and windshield wipers. We can also teach our kids how to cook, clean, take care of their health along with taking them to a train depot to learn about trains and transportation. With Lifeshooling the possibilities are endless and every day is a field trip. The great thing about Lifeschooling is that you can teach your children at any time of day, not on a set schedule, not always from a text book, not always from a curriculum. Sure you can follow a curriculum but with Lifeschooling you can step away from the everyday curriculum and textbooks and teach your children through life experiences. With Lifeschooling nothing dictates the way you teach your children.

Not everyone is able to Lifeschool the way they want though. You will want to check with your state to see if they require a curriculum, a set amount of hours with preset subjects they must learn, or any other type of restrictions. However, you may still be able to Lifeschool but with some restrictions.

For those who are a little newer to the homeschool world I will go over what homeschooling is.

Instead of placing your child in public school you may be considering homeschooling. Homeschooling gives you a chance to spend more time with your child(ren), teach them the way you want them to be taught, and teach them on your schedule. With homeschooling you get to choose the curriculum you want to use and adjust it according to the way you want to teach your child. With homeschooling you can take your child(ren) on as many fieldtrips as you want, whenever you would like.

You will want to check with your state about homeschooling laws. You can easily do this at hslda.org.

Unschooling has a couple different terms.

One term is that a child can learn whatever they want, whenever they want. You teach them by their interests, talents, and hobbies. Much like Lifeschooling you don't teach from a particular curriculum or textbooks.

Another term is that life and learning are the same thing. Just as the saying goes: "You learn something new everyday!" and how true is that?! In life no matter what we are doing, we are constantly learning. On the other hand while we are learning, we are living life!

Lifeschooling, Homeschooling and Unschooling are all ways to teach your child outside of the public school system. Everyone has one main reason as to why they want to teach their children from home. My husband and I want our children homeschooled primarily because we want to teach them about our faith and teach them the Bible everyday. We also have over 20 other reasons why we homeschool our children.

Here is a list of great books for kids to read from Kindergarten through 12th grade. From fun books to learning books there is something here for every child. A lot of these books I remember reading when I was younger. Some of these books I still enjoy reading to this day. I would love for my children to grow up reading these books too. I hope this list inspires and blesses you and your children.
I drew the owl's to save money on decorations. Why buy when I can make it?!
I was blessed to get the white boards from my dad. He got them for free and gave them to me for our homeschooling room. If you're looking for a free or cheap white board read the end of my post. You will find a lot of money saving tips!
Homeschooling doesn't have to be expensive! Let me share with you some of my favorite ways to save money on the things we have in our homeschooling room.
First, my mom knew we needed stuff for homeschooling, so she went out of her way to help bring me some office supplies. 3 boxes worth of office supplies that she no longer needs.
Then I found out that our state university has a reuse program. This program is set up so that when teachers/instructors or the school no longer needs their supplies or furniture they mark it with a "reuse" sticker and send it to the warehouse. At the warehouse they put prices (cheap) on the furniture to resell to make money for the university. They also have a HUGE isle FULL of FREE office supplies! My husband and I went and grabbed 2 bags and 1 box of supplies! I was so excited!!!
Here are some pictures of the things my mom brought me and the things I grabbed for free and the reuse warehouse:

3 stacks of 3 ring binders.

I hope your state university or close college has a reuse program you can go to because they are amazing! You will be amazed at all the things they have in these warehouses. The next time I go to the reuse warehouse I will take pictures and post them.
Sounds funny but yes, I grabbed some shipping folders. :)
There are 2 cups full of paper clips, a ton of black paper clips ( I don't know the technical name of them), a white basket, a green separator basket, and book spines for books, planners, etc.
2 off white magazine holders.
These next items are from Target's $1 section. So they didn't cost any more than $3. The magazine holders, small buckets, days of the week wall hanging, stickers and pencils came from target. I got the stacks of colored paper for $0.52 at Lakeshore learning along with a basic concepts book that was on sale, a free planner, and a few other things. The alphabet chart came from one of our local elementary schools.

I also like checking out craigslist for free things. They always have things that people are getting rid of that I could use.
I'm far from finishing our homeschool room. My husband is going to make me a chalkboard and a cork board. I'm also working on the decorations for the walls. When our homeschool room is complete and organized I will definitely blog about it and post pics.
Other ways to save on homeschooling things:
1. Check out garage sales in your area. Often times they have furniture you can use for storage, tables, and filing cabinets. They also sometimes have used curriculum, world globes, decorations, books, etc.
2. Cragislist: Craigslist - Especially the free section. They always have things that are usable for homeschooling.
3. Target: Target's dollar section. Right now they have a ton of school items for $1 or $3. They have USA maps, World maps, school supplies, planners, and so many other things!
4. Wal-Mart: Wal-mart- Yes, I know some of you boycott Wal-mart, but sometimes you just can't beat the prices on their school supplies.

5. Lowes, Menards, Home Depot: Lowes, Menards, Home Depot -Make your own chalk board or cork boards. You will save a lot of money this way.
6. Instead of having a white board: put together some picture frames, add some colored paper instead of a picture, and use dry erase markers on the glass. You have a home made "white board" that looks amazing!
If you want a white board: A great way to save is to find someone throwing out an old bathtub surround. Cut it down to size and add a frame. (This awesome idea came from my sister.)
7. Free curriculum. There are quite a few web sites that offer free curriculum which I posted about in my "Free Curriculum" (Free Curriculum) post.
8. Instead of buying books for your kids to read: Have a library day once a week where you check out books for a week or two. If you want to buy books a few great places to save money are: half price books, amazon.com (amazon.com), craigslist, or local co-ops (sometimes they have book swaps or you are able to buy books for cheap from other homeschooling moms).

The importance of sleep for you and your homeschooler.

Sleep is important because it stabilizes blood sugar levels, reduces inflammation, helps improve memory, helps build muscle, reduces stress level, helps with weight loss, and increases creativity. While you sleep your cells repair themselves, your body releases important hormones, and your brain recharges.

To get good sleep try doing these things:
1. Make sure your room is dark, cool and quiet.
2. Have a bedtime routine: take a hot shower, read a book, or listen to quiet music.
3. Avoid eating big meals before bed. A good rule to follow is no food after 7 pm.
4. Exercise during the day. Do you have PE lined up for your kids? This would be a perfect time to fit the exercise in.
5. Don't drink caffeine near bed time. The caffeine will keep you awake longer.
6. Try to go to bed at the same time each night.

Money Saving Hacks - 15 ways to help you save smarter!

This post is a continuation of the " Money Saving Apps" post.
I have stuff here you may already do, but I also have things that you might not have even thought of before. I hope this post inspires you and helps you to be able to save your money easier.
Here is a list of life hacks to save money:

1. Eat at home: Everyone should know that it's cheaper to eat at home. If you're not convinced take a pad of paper and pen with you throughout the week. Write down every dollar amount you spend eating out, getting a soda, coffee, snack, or anything else you get that isn't prepared at home. At the end of the week add up your total, then go grocery shopping with a list of meals for the week. You'll find that it's cheaper and healthier to eat at home.
If you're worried about the time it takes to prepare a meal, set one day aside per week and pre cook all of your meals, then freeze them. When its time to eat just heat it up and enjoy.

2. Couponing & grocery lists: This goes with eating at home. Make yourself a list of meals you plan on shopping for. Save your coupons, some stores will take expired coupons for up to 3 months. (Check with your local grocery store first). Find the coupons you need for the items your getting on your list. You could also plan your meals around the coupons you have and create your list from there. There is a lot to be saved with coupons! If you don't like couponing, you can read the "Money Saving Apps" post. There are apps that have coupons and you can show them at the register.

3. Eat leftovers: Part of eating at home is eating leftovers. It saves money by not having to get groceries for more meals and eating out.

4. Farmers Market: Shop at your local farmers market for fresh produce that is cheaper than the stores. Most farmers markets have a huge variety of produce to chose from.

5. Dollar Store: You can save big at the dollar store. Instead of buying bread at the grocery store, you can save by getting it for $1.00. Same with canned goods, snacks, and a lot of other items. Not only can you save with grocery items but you can also save of toiletries, party and school supplies.

6. Sams club/Costco: Buying in bulk can usually save you quite a bit of money too. There is an app called "Boxed" that you can buy in bulk from and have it mailed directly to your house.

7. Loyalty cards: Almost every store has a loyalty card. Each store works differently but they are all made to save you money.

8. Student ID Discount: Use your student ID card or your child's to get a discount. Some restaurants and stores give discounts for students.

9. Back to school deals: In July, stores have savings on clothes with up to 50% off. In August, stores have Fall clothes for up to 25% off.

10. Thrift shop: Thrift stores are one of my favorite places to shop. You can get really good deals on things and their clothes are in great condition. You can find just about anything at a thrift shop.

11. Energy efficient: Save as much energy as you can. Turn everything off when you leave the room. You'd be surprised how much you could save by doing this.

12. Save your change: Save all of your change in a jar. Don't touch it for 1 year. At the end of the year, count up all the change you collected.

13. Library/e-books: You can save money by going to the library and reading free e-books instead of buying books. You will save a lot of space this way too.

14. Pre-paid phones: Buying a pre-paid phone isn't as bad as you think. The price is cheaper for the same type of service with contract phone. You still get 4G, unlimited talk & text, etc. Why not save a chunk of change by switching to pre-paid?!

15. Dumpster dive: I don't mean going through trash for food. I mean find great pieces of furniture that someone threw out, bags of clothes someone didn't want anymore that are still in great condition, movies, books, the items are endless.

I hope this list has given you some great ideas for how to save some money. Another great idea is use Dave Ramsey's Financial Peace University tool. This is a great way to budget.

Socializing your homeschooler

A lot of people have the misconception that homeschoolers are not socialized and just stay at home all day every day. But, we know that homeschoolers are often times more socialized than public school kids.

Socializing your child helps them prepare for the real world. They need to be introduced to all walks of life. You teach your kids social skills every time you go to the store, meet with friends, and go to a restaurant. They watch the way you interact with other people, which teaches them the way they should interact too. Make sure you are making time to get your child out of the house for social time.

Here are some ways you can socialize your child while homeschooling:

1. Field trips. Taking your children on field trips can help them meet new people, make friends, and it helps with learning things in the outside world. (You can read about all different kinds of field trips in our post " Field Trip Ideas"
2. Join a local homeschool group/co-op. This is a great way for your kids to meet other homeschoolers.
3. Have your child join a sport through the school district or city. This is a great way for your child to interact with other kids and get exercise.
4. Summer and winter camps. They will meet other kids and have a blast at camp. Plus, you will get a small break too.
5. Music classes. Find a local instructor or music store that teaches music classes.
6. Church. If you attend church, your child can participate in the church clubs for kids.
7. Go to the park. Meeting new friends at the park is always exciting!
8. Spelling bee. If your child is great at spelling, get them involved in spelling bee's. This could be a wonderful way for your child to meet friends and be social.
9. Help around the neighborhood. Have your child help go around the neighborhood and ask neighbors if they need help mowing, gardening, shoveling, raking, etc.

There are so many ways that you can socialize your homeschooler. I know I am missing quite a few. What are some ways that you socialize your child? Please share in the comments below.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2746888577645432161.post-89624765241390413192015-08-11T00:52:00.001-05:002015-08-11T00:52:48.629-05:0099 Problems

A small portion of our journey with our son from ages 2-5.

My 5-year-old son is nothing short of defiant. He's a boy, he's 5, and like all kids, he is wild, loud and all over the place. However, this child is a bit different. When he was two, he refused to talk. My husband and I would teach him over and over again how to say words, but they just came out as yelling nonsense. When he didn't get his way he would yell as loud as he could, an eardrum piercing yell that would send shivers down your spine.

As he got older, we noticed that he wasn't learning his colors, ABC's, how to count, etc. He was having the most difficult time learning things and he couldn't remember the things he was taught the day before. On top of this difficulty, he was being defiant. We would tell him to help us clean up toys but, he would run off screaming. We would grab him, bring him back to his room, and try to get him to clean up his toys. Fits of rage, more screaming, crying, arms whaling, and kicking followed. We tried time outs, early bedtime, taking away toys, no TV, a reward system for cleaning up, etc. But nothing seemed to work with him.

It came down to us calling for help through our school district that offered services for play therapy, speech therapy, and behavioral issues. We went through play therapy with him for a good 4 months before realizing that it just wasn't working. He would be great in front of the therapist most of the time but, once in a while he would show the defiant side. Everything the therapist suggested in play therapy we did at home.

Here's what we did: When he misbehaved and didn't listen, he got a time out. (This was in a designated timeout chair.) His timeouts were 3 minutes in length. If he got up, talked, or screamed while in time out, he would get a second chance to start his time out over. If he misbehaved in timeout again, he would go to a "time out room". (The timeout room was a designated room that was quiet and away from any distractions.) In the timeout room, he would have to remain quiet for 5 minutes. If he didn't, the time started over. This repeated until he was quiet for 5 minutes. Once he could do that, he went back to his normal time out chair to sit for 1 minute to prove that he could listen and behave in time out. Once he was able to get out of time out we talked about why he was in time out, how to avoid timeout again, and to apologize for the wrong behavior. We tried this routine day in and day out for the full 4 months while he was going through play therapy.

Fast forward to age 5. We have put him through family therapy to figure out if we were doing something wrong as parents. Maybe there was something else out there that could show us a discipline that our son would respond positively to and learn from. Maybe there was a way we could get him to learn his colors, how to count, and his ABC's. Going through this family therapy has been great for us. He is finally getting tested to see what kind of learning disability he has (if he has one) and if he has a behavior disorder. Our son finally knows how to count to ten, recognizes the color blue and most of the time he recognizes the color red, and he also knows the letters A and X. We're also practicing letter tracing with him so he can learn to write his name.

Thankfully we are homeschooling him this year because he definitely isn't ready for Kindergarten (in the districts eyes). Back when I was in kindergarten that's when we learned the ABC's, how to count, our colors, shapes, etc. Now they want children to know all of that in preschool before they get to kindergarten.

We have been through a lot with our son but, I hope we can get it all figured out in the next month with his tests. It will help us know what type of learner he is, what will work with discipline, and help us know what kind of behavior disability (if any) he has so we can correct it.

When I was younger I loved going on field trips. I didn't care where we were going, I just didn't want to be at school. Little did I know that I was actually learning a lot on these field trips.
Homeschoolers are always looking for field trips to go on. Something new and exciting that they haven't done before and something that goes along with their lesson plans.
Going on field trips to learn about the outside world is an important part of learning. If you're looking for fun field trips, look no further!
A lot of museums and the like have free or cheap memberships for those going through hardships. Call your local museum to find out more information.
Saving for your child's future isn't easy. But, there are a few programs out there that can help and make saving a bit easier. Let's face it, college isn't cheap and we would all love for our children to go to college. With that said, I've researched different types of accounts to help invest in educational expenses.

There are a few different types of savings accounts:

1. ESA (Educational Savings Accounts): This type of account is tax-free and allows individuals to deposit up to $2,000 per year for an eligible beneficiary. The funds must be used by the age of 30 for qualified educational expenses. All contributions to the account must be made by the time the child reaches the age of 18. Family and friends may contribute to this account, so make sure that the deposits don't go above $2,000 each year. This account is set up so that the funds may be used for private school, homeschool, college or any other school related expense.
To find out more about an ESA please visit investopedia.com or us.hsbc.com

2. QTP (Qualified Tuition Program)- 529 College savings account: The funds in this type of account can only be used for college. This program is operated by the state or educational institution designed to help set up funds for college expenses. This type of account is federal income tax exempt. There are two different types of 529 savings accounts; prepaid plans and savings plans.
To learn more about a 529 savings account please visit
savingforcollege.com
Many different banks and financial advisors offer ESA's and 529 savings accounts.

Upromise also has a couple of savings plans/accounts. Upromise by Sallie Mae is a company that helps families save for college. They help their members earn cash back for college; when you use your credit card on things you already purchase you get cash back (which goes into your desired savings account). Joining Upromise is free and is a great way to save using one of these plans:
1. 529 plan
2. High yield savings account

Have you started saving for your child's future? What type of account would you recommend?
My husband and I knew we wanted to homeschool but really couldn't afford it. We had our son registered to start kindergarten at a public school. The more we looked into homeschooling the more we wanted to do it. I began talking with my sister, whom is a homeschooling mom herself. She gave me so many resources and tips that I couldn't keep up. I really wouldn't know what to do if it wasn't for her! I always believed that all curriculum was expensive or cost too much for us to afford. Well, I was wrong. There are plenty of places that provide free curriculum. We also wanted to choose something Christian based. I have put both lists on here, Christian and public. I will be updating these as I find and review them.

Although these sights provide free curriculum, please keep in mind that you will still need a printer, ink, paper, pens or pencils, and other school supplies.
